Information re Bogus Gas Meter Reader
Police are urging residents to be on the look out for a bogus gas board official who tricked his way into a house in Furlong Close, Wallington, on Thursday 4th February at 8am. The caller said he was from British Gas. He was shown the cupboard containing the electricity meter and he jotted down some numbers on his clipboard before leaving. Nothing was stolen.
Suspicious, the resident, a 57-year-old woman, contacted British Gas and EDF, her other energy supplier, and they both reported that they had no meter readers in the area that day. The man was described as white, aged around 28-35 with dark brown cropped hair. He was wearing a dark zip-up jacket to the neck. He drove off in a black BMW 3 series car.
PC Pat Simcox, of Sutton’s Crime Prevention Team, said residents should keep out unknown and unexpected callers. Always ask for ID and contact your utility company to set up a password, which their representatives have to confirm when visiting your home.
