How We Work

The Co-ordinator's role
Our aim is to help people to protect themselves and their properties, to reduce the fear of crime and improve the local environment, also to promote a community spirit and neighbourliness through the network of Ward and Street Co-ordinators, who are the backbone of Neighbourhood Watch.
Having made the decision to become a co-ordinator, you have taken the first step in bringing your community together. Once you start talking to your neighbours you will be surprised at the positive response. There will be few people who will refuse to join a group that has benefits for their community.
Your enthusiasm and commitment is very important to the Neighbourhood Watch Association and your supporters. It will show in how successful your Watch is. But remember the role of Co-ordinator need not take up very much of your time or be difficult or demanding... the choice is yours.
The main function is to:-
• keep an eye on any vulnerable neighbours
• keep supporters interested and enthusiastic about Neighbourhood Watch
• give suitable information, advice and publicity material to your supporters
• keep a record of your supporters details (whilst preserving their confidentiality) and give them window and door stickers to display
• encourage people to join Neighbourhood Watch, especially newcomers to the neighbourhood
• keep a note of incidents or reports made to you and then pass them on to your local Safer Neighbourhood Team
The role of the Street Co-ordinator is to :-
• maintain regular contact with the Ward Co-ordinator and the Ward Safer Neighbourhood Police Team
• maintain contact with the residents in your area, and encourage them to be vigilant at all times and report anything suspicious
• keep the Ward Co-ordinator informed of any crime trends or concerns
• ensure that all residents are aware of the Ward Neighbourhood Watch scheme and encourage the local householders to protect themselves and their properties
• distribute any literature to the residents of their street whenever necessary
The role of the Ward (area) Co-ordinator is to:-
• be the focal point for communication between the Ward Safer Neighbourhood Police Team and the Street Co-ordinators within the ward
• maintain regular contact with the Street Co-ordinators and other members of the Ward
• arrange, in conjunction with the Neighbourhood Watch Association meetings of the ward Street Co-ordinators and the Ward Safer Neighbourhood Police Team
• recruit new Street Co-ordinators as necessary and to encourage expansion throughout the Ward
• work closely with the Neighbourhood Watch Association Committee to achieve the objectives of the Association
